Bideona (from bide-ona which is Basque for ‘the good way’) is a winery Rioja Alavesa that produces terroir-driven, site-specific wines from historic, low-yielding vineyards and aims to contribute decisively to a new generation of Rioja wines – more expressive of origin than method of production.
Bodega Bideona is the culmination of more than a decade of efforts by a unique and eclectic group of wine professionals. They aspire to produce wines that are a benchmark for Rioja Alavesa as one of the great places in the world, as well as contributing to the economic and environmental sustainability of Spain’s landscapes and ecosystems.
Bideona is a joint venture between the Izagirre family and Península Vinicultores with a highly experienced team of wine professionals, sharing a love for Rioja and the vision to realise its potential as one of the great wine origins of the world as they apply a distinct approach and unique resources to vineyards that are among the very best in Spain.
Currently, one third of the vineyards are owned by the winery or their shareholders, another third by the historic suppliers of the winery they bought in 2018, and the last third they have recently incorporated in villages where they did not have a presence. Each plot is managed independently, according to its quality potential, regardless of its owner.
Peninsula manages all aspects of Bideona – viticulture, winemaking marketing, and sales. The aim is to apply a non-dogmatic, holistic and cross-functional approach to fully integrate every decision, from vineyard to market.
The winery believes it is a crucial and fascinating moment for Rioja, when the region finally starts to articulate its diversity and offer not only excellent wines of style, but also wines of place, capable of expressing its landscapes, villages and vineyards in the glass.
Bideona cultivates over 300 parcels of incredible vineyards in the most important villages and sites in Rioja Alavesa: Villabuena de Álava, Samaniego, Laguardia, Leza, Baños de Ebro, Navaridas, Lanciego and Elciego. The average vineyard size is around 0.3 ha and the average age around 50 years old, with many parcels planted in the 1920s, 30s and 40s.
Bideona makes parcel, village and regional wines. Wines are classified by the quality and specific origin of the grapes, and not by their ageing times.
Bideona wines are fresh and elegant, deep, precise and capable of long ageing; wines that reflect the parcels, villages and vineyards of Rioja Alavesa in the glass striving to be references of their origins.
