A family, a mountain and generations of Rioja
In the heart of Rioja Alavesa, Bodegas Eguren Ugarte has been making wine for generations. Founded in 1870, the family winery combines deep Rioja roots with a modern approach to wine, food and hospitality.
Its wines have earned international recognition — including a place among Wine Enthusiast’s 100 Best Values — but the real story begins when you arrive at the winery.
The place
There is something special about Rioja Alavesa. Vineyards stretch beneath the Sierra de Cantabria, with old villages, stone walls and mountain landscapes shaping both the wine and the way of life.
At Eguren Ugarte, the vineyards and winery are part of the same experience. Beneath the estate lies an impressive network of underground wine cellars, carved into the hillside and used for generations of wine ageing.
The people
Eguren Ugarte remains a family story. Several generations have worked with the vineyards and winery, building a business where wine, hospitality and the culture of Rioja belong together.
For the family, welcoming people to the winery is not an extra. It is part of sharing Rioja.
Their way of making wine
The approach is rooted in Rioja tradition, but there is no need to stand still. Tempranillo is at the heart of the wines, supported by other traditional varieties and vineyards selected from Rioja Alavesa.
The winery combines careful vineyard work with modern winemaking and long ageing — allowing the wines to develop their character while remaining unmistakably Rioja.

A wine with a story
Anastasio is Eguren Ugarte’s flagship red wine. Anastasio is special because it is a rare, premium 100% Tempranillo red wine produced from a Single Vineyard (Viñedo Singular) officially recognized by the DOCa Rioja. Recognized by critics, including 94 points from the Wine Advocate and 91 points from the Peñín Guide
What to look for in the glass
Look beyond the first sip. Rioja can be about fruit, oak and structure, but also about how these elements come together with time.
Look for the balance between ripe fruit, freshness and the savoury character that makes traditionally styled Rioja so good with food.

2017 Eguren Ugarte Cincuenta Tempranillo
James Suckling: “An unassuming nose of plums, cherries, earth, and sweet spices. It is medium-bodied with assertive, chalky tannins and bright acidity. The palate offers a lively, elegant, and silky texture with plenty of cherry character and a succulent, long, fruit-driven finish.” 92 Points
If you visit
Eguren Ugarte is not simply a place to taste wine. It is somewhere to spend time.
Visitors can explore the underground cellars, walk among the vineyards, taste the wines and combine the experience with food. There are different wine-tourism experiences available, making it an easy way to discover Rioja from inside the winery rather than from the other side of a tasting counter.
This is Rioja you can walk into.
Internationally recognised wines
Eguren Ugarte wines have received strong reviews from Wine Enthusiast, James Suckling, Decanter, Tim Atkin, Wine Spectator and Robert Parker, including scores up to 97 points from Decanter, 94 from James Suckling and Robert Parker, and 93 from Wine Enthusiast.
