Our Discovery Club lives up to its name, it is a journey through several of the most popular regions in Spain, you get to try the most important grapes and get to know some of the absolute best producers. In this first of four collection boxes, you will get to try the following wines:

  • Antídoto – An exciting wine which is trending upwards in Spain but which not many people know outside their home country, yet.
  • Izadi Selección – Another wine that is not so well known outside of Spain, but is made from the best grapes from old vineyards around Bodega Izadi, a hidden jewel for us northerners that will become many people’s new favourite.
  • Viña Sastre Roble – A bodega that in Spain is associated with top class quality. This is a “roble”, a wine that has been aged for six months in barrels but is already well balanced with a lovely aftertaste. One of the best noble wines we have ever tasted!
  • Marques de Monistrol Cava Premium Cuvée – Quality Cava that has an interesting history stretching back to the 19th century when the Marquis of Monistrol who liked bubbly expanded his vineyard and took over the monastery (monistrol) from the monks .

Description

Antídoto

Antídoto is a wine coming from a mosaic of 550 old vine plots of land mainly made of pebbles, located in the Soto de San Esteban area. It has a yield production of 3500 kilos per hectare in the eastern part of the DO Ribera de Duero in Soria.

Producer: Bodegas Antidoto
Region: Ribera del Duero, Spain
Varietal: Tempranillo
Vintage: 2020
Format: 0,75L
Alcohol content: 14%
Serving temperature: 16-18°C
Robert Parker: 92-93 Points

James Suckling: 91 Points

Robert Parker: “I also tasted an unbolted barrel sample of the 2020 Antidoto, a blend of 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Albillo that had a short maceration and has been in 600 liter oak barrels (only 5% of them new) since January 2021. It looks like a superb vintage for this wine that still shows the wild and faintly herbal side that makes me think of a Northern Rhone – juicy and very fine with chalky tannins and a dry and varietal finish. This is a little like 2018, approachable and understandable from early on. Volumes will grow in 2020.” 92-93 Points

James Suckling: “Lots of thyme-like herbs and spices on top of the dark plums, dried strawberries and cherries. Medium-to full-bodied and dense on the palate, with lots of tight tannins tucked into the fresh red fruit. Fruity, medium-length finish. Chewy and tight now, but will come around in two years.” 91 Points

Tempranillo.

ORIGIN
Ribera del Duero’s reputation has grown due to its high-quality red wines made mainly from Tempranillo grapes. Tempranillo is the most popular grape variety, locally known as Tinto Fino or Tinta del Pais. Wines from this grape are pigmented, with a firm tannin structure and complex aromas of dark fruit.

PRODUCER
Bodegas Antidoto.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Antídoto is a young project that started in 2010 from vineyards managed from Soria. Its aim is to produce fine and unique wines in the eastern part of Ribera del Duero, a region characterized by its many small plots, on which the old vines grow at an altitude of more than 1000 meters.

Izadi Selección

Izadi Selección is one of the treasures of Bodegas Izadi, the fruit of a rigorous selection of the best grapes from old vineyards owned by the winery at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, in the triangle formed by Villabuena, Samaniego and Ábalos.

Producer: Bodegas Izadi
Region: Rioja, Spain
Varietal: Tempranillo, Graciano, Mataran Tinta
Vintage: 2017
Format: 0,75L
Alcohol content: 14,5%
Temperature: 16-18°C
Guía Peñín: 92 Points
James Suckling: 92 Points

Selección is made with carefully selected grapes, singled out as the best representatives of Izadi’s essence and personality.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (2019): “Here the 2019 Selección is more expensive than the Reserva (in some places it’s cheaper than the Crianza, which makes it slightly confusing). I see better integration of the oak here than in the 2018 Reserva, and they achieved good balance with the blend of 82% Tempranillo, 11 % Graciano, 4% Maturana Tinta and 3% Garnacha that reached 14.5% alcohol but feels balanced. It fermented by plot and village in 10,000-liter tanks and matured in French oak barrels for 14 months. 121,000 bottles and 500 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2021.” 92 Points

PRODUCER
Bodegas Izadi.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Bodegas Izadi is located in Rioja Alavesa, where Tempranillo thrives in a microclimate strongly influenced by both the altitude and the proximity to the Atlantic.

Viña Sastre Roble 2020

Viña Sastre Roble 2020 is a red wine with power and complexity where different aromas dominate with slightly toasted notes as a result of its ageing. Well integrated, pleasant and easy to drink.

Producer: Hermanos Sastre
Region: Ribera del Duero, Spain
Varietal: Tempranillo
Vintage: 2020
Format: 0,75L
Alcohol content: 14.5%
Temperature: 15°C
Robert Parker: 90 Points (2011)

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “The 2011 Vina Sastre Roble, raised in second-use oak barrel for six months, seems a little disjointed after the superlative 2010, although it still offers plenty of wild strawberry and dark plum aromas that settle down with a modicum of aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a bright, sparky entry of cassis and red cherry fruit infused with dried orange rind and white pepper. The palate is very well-balanced with crisp acidity, great harmony and superb length in the mouth. Like the 2010, there is convincing poise and tension: a Roble that exudes a sense of place. Drink 2013-2018”. 90 Points
