Restaurante Rekondo

One of the best restaurants in San Sebastián, Rekondo serves upscale traditional Basque cuisine and boasts a world-renowned wine cellar.

Opened in 1964 by Txomin Rekondo the restaurant is nestled on the winding roads climbing up Monte Igeldo, offering a peaceful escape from the city center. It features an enchanting, leafy outdoor terrace for summer meals and light-filled, elegant indoor dining rooms.

But perhaps the most important part of Rekondo is the cellar which houses nearly 100,000 bottles with a massive 340-page wine book featuring rare historical Spanish vintages and global selections. The wine collection is practically unmatched, with bottle prices often noted as a great value compared to international restaurants. It has received major recognition, including two Gold Stars in the 2026 Star Wine List of the Year Spain awards — for Best Long Wine List and Best Champagne Wine List.

Rekondo has historically been famous for an extraordinary depth of Spanish wines and multiple vintages. Old Rioja takes centre stage here. There are stories of bottles going back many decades — including an 1881 Marqués de Riscal and exceptionally old CVNE and Viña Real; old Rioja alongside today’s wines, giving you the chance to taste Spain’s wine history rather than simply read about it.
One of the great surprises of Rioja is discovering what happens when the whites are given time. Rekondo has long been a place where mature Spanish whites can be explored, and that is an excellent story for Try Spanish Wine because people often associate Rioja almost exclusively with red wine.

“Some wine lists tell you what to drink. Rekondo tells you where Spanish wine has been.”

The restaurant itself says its philosophy is centred on product and respecting its flavours. The current menu includes things like traditional fish soup, grilled lobster, premium beef chop, suckling pig and local cheeses.

The menu features classic, upscale Basque dishes that respect local traditions and seasonality.

Menu Highlights include the Baked crab (Txangurro a la Donostiarra), grilled fish like charcoal-roasted turbot and the suckling pig.
