The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, often simply referred to as La Boqueria, is Europe’s biggest food market in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona and one of the city’s foremost tourist landmarks, with a long and colourful history.

The Boqueria market dates back to 1217, when tables were installed near the old city gate to sell meat.

Today’s market has an enormously diverse selection of produce and is a true delight for all the senses, with its display of bright colours, elaborate mounds of fruit and vegetables, assortments of herbs and spices, fresh juices, sweets, fresh cuts of meat and fish and so on.
