Herboristeria del Rei

One of the oldest shops in Barcelona, opened in 1823, Herboristeria del Rei is the first herbalist in Barcelona and Catalonia. The venue was renovated in 1857 under the patronage of Queen Isabel II. There is a gallery with oil paintings, somewhat faded through time, the shop has drawers with miniature landscapes in water-colour and the ceiling is painted glass. This Roman Catholic basilica, designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí is a Barcelona landmark. Antoni Gaudí is a famous New Catalan or Modernist architect who created amazing fantastical buildings, sculptures and other structures. Founded in 1966, the Museu de Ceràmica de Barcelona collection contains some of the most important Spanish ceramic works which stand out for their originality and artistic value. Park Güell, Antoni Gaudí

Museu Picasso

This is Barcelona’s most visited museum with many works from Picasso’s early years and especially his Blue Period, with canvasses like The Defenceless, as well as ceramics and early works from the 1890s, and the ‘Sabartés’ Room. Jaume Sabartés was a sculptor and writer. He had met Picasso in 1899 and became an enthusiastic supporter of the artist’s work. In 1935 he moved to Paris to become the artist’s private secretary and subsequently published a biography of the artist and other writings on the artist’s life and work.

Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA)

American architect Richard Meier has designed this museum with its long white stone structure in 1995 to display a variety of contemporary artworks. The Foundation MACBA manages the permanent collection, which dates from the mid-20th century onward. There are three periods of modern art represented: the first one covers the forties to the sixties; the second spans the sixties and seventies; the third period is contemporary. The Gran Teatre del Liceu

Built in 1847, Barcelona’s famous Gran Teatre del Liceu is considered one of the finest opera houses in Europe where the finest operas of the international repertoire have been staged, and leading operatic stars have performed, among them several Catalans including Montserrat Caballé, Josep Carreras and Jaume Aragall. Although tragically burnt down in 1994, when the auditorium and stage were destroyed, it has been rebuilt and extended. Scrupulous care was taken to faithfully restore the auditorium to its former glory, with the exception of some frescoes and a stage curtain designed by Antonio Miró.

Museu Nacional d’art de Catalunya (MNAC)

Museu d’Historia de Barcelona (MUHBA)

CaixaForum Barcelona

In 1940 the building was used by the Spanish National Police Force, and it was used as such until “la Caixa” bought it in 1963. It was opened as a museum in February 2002.
